Update

Last week's election will bring new voices to Washington next year, not only within the Executive Branch, but also on Capitol Hill. At this time, nine races (3 Senate and 6 House) currently remain undecided, but the Democrats will pick-up at least 6 seats in the Senate and 20 seats in the House. Notably, no members of the Senate HELP Committee, nor any House Education and Labor Committee Democrats, lost their reelection bid. Three sitting Republican members of the Education and Labor Committee, however, were defeated: Rep. Keller (FL), Rep. Kuhl (NY) and Rep. Walberg (MI).

President-Elect Obama's transition team is begining to take shape . As the transition process begins to strengthen over the next few days and weeks, we expect the transition team to begin substantive conversations with other key education groups and members of Congress, which will help to provide the basis for the President-elect's early education agenda.

Please find a brief overview of the remaining undecided House and Senate races below:

Current Senate Overview
(57 Democrats - 40 Republicans, 3 races undecided)

Democrats picked up 6 seats in the Senate with races in Alaska, Minnesota, and Georgia still officially undecided.

  • AK: Sen. Stevens leads the Alaska race by approximately 3,400 votes, with 99% of precincts reporting.
  • MN: Sen. Coleman leads the Minnesota race by less than 250 votes . This race is subject to an automatic recount .
  • GA: Sen. Chambliss leads with 49.8% of the vote with 99% of precincts reporting. Georgia law requires the winner to capture "50% plus one" to avoid a run-off election, which will be held in December.

Current House Overview
