Update
On March 31, 2009 Congress passed
The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (H.R. 1388). The bill includes the expansion of existing service programs, as well as four new service corps focused on education, health care, energy and veterans. Specifically, the bill increases AmeriCorp education awards, establishes and "Education Corp" to increase student achievement in low-income areas, and creates a "Summer of Service" program that engages middle and high school students in volunteer activities in their communities in exchange for a $500 education award to be used for college costs.
