The Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governor Association Center for Best Practices this week published the final Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics. The roll-out event, held in suburban Atlanta, included participation from a range of education stakeholders, including state, district and local officials as well as union, civil rights and education reform leaders. The standards define the knowledge and skills students should have to graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs. Participating states will now begin the standards adoption and implementation process. State adoption timelines will vary, but a significant number of states are expected to adopt the standards this year, including a number of states who will work to complete the adoption process quickly in order to strengthen their Race to the Top applications.

Also this week, 35 states and the District of Columbia filed Phase II Race to the Top applications by the competition's June 2 deadline. These states are seeking a share of the program's remaining $3.4 billion. $600 million was awarded to Tennessee and Delaware in Phase I of the competition.
